We reported the research result about our branding project "Analysis of changes in carcinogenic susceptibility in human and companion animals: Toward establishment of healthy environment" at the 6th Asian Congress on Environmental Mutagens (ACEM/JEMS 2019) on Nov. 18-20 on Tokyo.

About Our University Research The goal of the project proposed by our university is to scientifically elucidate“ Human-Animal Symbiotic Systems” as a step toward realizing a healthy human society.
The project will demonstrate social relationships between humans and animals represented by dogs, that is why symbiosis is established how much symbiotic influence is exerted by animal-derived microflora on the promotion of human health, and the mechanism of symbiosis with these animals.

An article on “The Search for Allergy Suppressing Bacteria from Canine Bacterial Flora” was published in the Frontline Research segment of the Yomiuri Shimbun dated 27 September (Morning/Kanagawa Edition). This is one research subject in the Private University Research Branding Project, “Developing a Science of Human-Animal Symbiosis to Realize a Healthy Human Society.”

Regular Community Epidemiology Surveys are being conducted as part of a subproject of the Private University Research Branding Project “Conditions for a Pet Friendly Community: Enacting Deliberative Polling (DP) with ‘Mini-Publics’ and Community Epidemiology Surveys in America and Sagamihara.”
A total of twelve students from our university participated as investigators in carrying out surveys in a number of U.S. cities, including Brooklyn, New York, and San Francisco, California, from 23 August to 07 September 2018.
Using survey forms on a tablet, this investigation collected a record number of valid responses (161) and saliva samples (approximately 250). We are extremely grateful to the many individuals who participated in the survey.

A Community Epidemiology Survey will be conducted in the U.S. cities of Brooklyn, New York, and Berkeley, California, from 23 August to 07 September 2018 as part of the project “Conditions for a Pet Friendly Community: Enacting Deliberative Polling (DP) with ‘Mini-Publics’ and Community Epidemiology Surveys in America and Sagamihara.” This is one subproject of the Private University Research Branding Project. Twelve second- or third-year students of this university, acting as investigators, will conduct the survey using tablets. In preparation, the students have been conducting preliminary studies once a week since April of this year. In the final study session, the students’ method of using the survey form on the tablet was confirmed and they practiced asking participants in English to complete the survey until they were perfect. Last year over 100 valid survey responses and over 200 saliva samples were collected. We are eager to obtain even more data this year.

Students affiliated with the Community Studies Lab at Azabu University conducted the Pet Friendly Community Survey in three dog parks located in the U.S. states of New York and California.
1. Key Findings
●Among the respondents to the community survey, over half of the pet owners had a limited pet ownership experience of 0 to 3 years.
78% of the respondents stated that they had “pet friends” whom they had met through their pet.
●74% of the responses considered “parks” and “open spaces” necessary facilities for pet owners.
For those who had never owned a pet, many responded that their image of a “pet friendly community” was a park.
●45% of “pet friends” talk about their methods of caring for their pets with one another.
The most common source of information on pet care was “pet friends” at 32%.
2. Background
Pets are an irreplaceable part of life for residents of large cities.
The weakening of mutual relationships and the worsening of the living environment in metropolitan areas may be the reason for this longing for Pet Friendly Communities.
However, major cities lack the space for exercise that pets need.
3. Research Findings
It is clear that respondents have struggled to create communities within a specific space, and a Pet Friendly Community is not a substitute.
Residents’ desire to build a community is being realized through their pets and stands before our eyes as a concrete possibility.
Thus, it may be said that the original meaning of “community” as a place in which citizens from a variety of backgrounds are accepted has evolved.
It was further found that “pet friends” provide residents an important opportunity to make connections with their community through their pets.
4. Future Developments
An inevitable challenge to creating pet friendly communities is reaching a consensus and reconciling residents with different interests.
There is a large body of historical evidence under the surface like an iceberg, but no leads were found in this study. Looking back on the process of reconciliation, we would like to present concrete examples of specific conditions and mechanisms of community formation.
